| It is an unfortunate reality that society today needs to contend with an increased threat to people, services, and infrastructure. One such danger and disruption arises from an increased threat posed by
powerful explosive devices. Countering this hazard requires an effective and innovative product equal to the task. In response, Cintec International has developed the water inflated Blastec Bomb Bin. Trials using up to 20Kg (44lb) of improvised
explosive device clearly demonstrate the system's effectiveness in mitigating the effects of blast and for the retention of fragmentation.
Trials demonstrate water to be an ideal medium to reduce the effects of an explosion; the blast wave is substantially lessened, the heat is absorbed, and fragmentation is either completely halted or significantly reduced. Furthermore, as water is
readily available, it is easy to inflate the Bomb Bin when and where necessary. Initially inflated with air to provide stability, it is then filled with water through a hose; the water displaces the air through a pressure relief valve (PRV). Each
unit is open at the top and bottom to facilitate deployment and for access to and inspection of the suspect object if required. When not in use, the water can be pumped out and the Bomb Bin deflated. Depending upon requirements, the Bomb Bin can be
fabricated from a choice of waterproof materials. The version produced in Neoprene externally coated reinforced fabric can remain inflated over long periods and through wide range of temperatures, it is ideal in environments where suspect objects
are commonly found such as postal sorting offices, |
or high security buildings. An alternative unit in Polyvinyl chloride (pvc) is designed for easy storage ready for manual deployment and rapid inflation when and where necessary; examples would include centres of transport, airports, department
stores, restaurants and emergency services. The dimensions of the Bomb Bin can also be adjusted to suit customer requirements. The system has undergone extensive research and testing with differing quantities of explosives. The data derived from
this research is provided at the foot of this page. In example No. 3 below, the deployment of the Bomb Bin results in a 65% reduction in the blast pressure generated at a distance of 5m (5.5 yards) as indicated by the pink line. The free field
